My prayer to embrace all nations in brotherhood

November 16, 2005—As US President George Bush visits China this weekend, there is speculation about what his talks with China’s leaders can accomplish. Some observers wonder if the president of a democracy and the dictator of a communist nation have enough in common to make serious progress.

In my prayers for peace among nations, I’ve felt more and more that there is a kind of spiritual equality before God that can transcend political boundaries and form a global brotherhood.

This great spiritual lesson is revealed in the Bible’s dramatic account of the meeting between a Roman officer named Cornelius and Simon Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples. Cornelius was “a devout man … and prayed to God alway,” but he certainly wasn’t the kind of person who would have had much contact with Peter. The Romans were an occupying force, not exactly friendly next-door neighbors.
