Listening for God's constant guidance

If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plan. That joke, for me, always conjures up the image of a gray-haired character, straight out of a Michelangelo painting, having a chuckle at my expense. And if I believed that’s what God is like, I’d also be pretty certain that I’ve provided Him with plenty of laughs over the years.

But I don’t think that’s what God is like. When I look at the lives of Old Testament leaders like Noah, Moses, Jonah, Elijah and Elisha—their successes as well as their failures, their confidence in God’s care as well as their doubts—I am inspired by their clear, results-based trust in God’s directives.

They all had instructions from God as primary motivators for their actions and decisions. They went where God told them to go (though not always eagerly) and did what He told them to do. I can only think that one reason these stories have survived the generations is that they so wonderfully demonstrate how following God’s guidance brings happiness, freedom and harmony.
