From griping to grace in a college town

“Well, they’re back,” was the sour comment from the man behind me in the grocery checkout line. Sure enough, as I glanced up from writing my check, I saw giggling students clogging the aisles of the store.

This time of year, the population swells as our college town welcomes back scads of students from their summer hiatus. It’s also the time of year when the “locals” seem to struggle with a needed attitude adjustment as the culture of our community changes to take in so many new young people.

I’ll have to admit, there’ve been a few years when my own attitude needed some adjusting too. I’ve griped and drummed my fingers on the steering wheel of my car while waiting impatiently for the long lines of traffic to disperse. And, admittedly, I’ve grumbled when we've had to wait to be seated at one of our favorite restaurants due to the college crowd.
