The Bible: A comfort to the heart

The week of November 20-27 is Bible Week in the United States—an annual opportunity to celebrate the Scriptures. If you’re wondering why people still are interested in the Bible, you’re probably not alone.

People generally used to know the Bible very well. It was part of the cultural idiom of the Western world, presented in art, music, literature and in expressions like the “good Samaritan.” Even people who weren’t “into” religion knew the Ten Commandments and could state the Golden Rule.

That’s not so true anymore. Busy lives, the increasing influence of science and technology and a certain percentage of the population that doesn’t consider itself religious seem to have sidelined the Bible.
