My record of integrity during a taxing time

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

During an audit by the Internal Revenue Service, the US government department that oversees tax revenue, the auditor discovered I’d deposited thousands of dollars into my bank account some years previously that I had not reported as income.

I knew I’d done nothing improper, but I had only a few weeks to explain where the money had come from. The problem was that I couldn’t come up with a convincing paper trail to show that I was innocent of wrongdoing. It was an anxious time, to put it mildly. How could I defend my integrity?

Finally, I put the paperwork aside and decided to pray—to think about my life from a more spiritual level. I’ve found this has a profound effect on things. By striving to be more conscious of the original, spiritual condition of my life—the order and perfection that God established—I experience more of the divine order.
