Homesick freshman learns to redefine "home"

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

I was a freshman in college, living on my own, just as I had planned. But I wasn't happy.

I had talked my parents into letting me go to college away from home. They wanted me to attend a local college and live at home the first two years, and then go to the school of my choice. But I thought I'd be missing out on something if I stayed home. Instead, by moving away, I was missing my parents, my boyfriend and, well, my home.

I felt lost, afraid and very alone, so much so that I occasionally broke down and cried in the middle of my classes.
