July is National Purposeful Parenting Month in the US. Purposeful Parenting is designed to elevate the level of parental effectiveness by building awareness and providing interested participants with tips for positive, conscientious parenting. The emphasis is on communication, unconditional love and a structured environment.

These are wonderful goals, but putting them into practice can be a challenge—as I've found from my own experience with our 9-year-old son, Robby. He's normally a happy and loving child, but recently, to anything I asked him to do, the answer was “No!” He seemed angry about everything.
