God’s affluence, already in place

God’s supply was already present, and my role was to pray to open my eyes to it.

With an ongoing water crisis in some parts of Johannesburg, South Africa, I have been compelled to think more profoundly about the true source of supply, which is God, Spirit—and about Spirit’s limitless resources. Frequent water outages in our region are worsened for my family by the fact that our home is situated at the top of an incline. When there is an infrastructure-related problem, we are usually the first to lose water and the last to receive it.

Water shortages affect far more than the ordinary practicalities of daily life, such as washing clothes, cleaning, cooking, and hygiene. In our case, and that of many others, they affect our livelihood as well, since we run a small guesthouse on the property. Like most households here, we have a five-thousand-liter water tank that stores municipal water for such outages. When regular municipal water is unavailable and this tank runs dry, we must purchase water from a private supplier at an exorbitant rate over and above normal monthly charges. With outages that can last ten to fourteen days, people in our area experience severe emotional distress. And the water crisis has driven property values down, making it unfeasible to sell homes and move elsewhere.

I reaffirmed that this need was already supplied, even if the solution had not yet appeared.
