Next steps for “Loving the Scriptures”
As some of our readers have noticed, our initial foray into this “Loving the Scriptures” column has included material that corresponded to the week’s Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson. While this felt like a natural place to start, we are widening the net to choose a broader range of Bible-related topics, and bring to our readers’ attention aspects of the Scriptures that are less regularly featured in the weekly Lesson and these periodicals.
Mary Baker Eddy said, “The one important interpretation of Scripture is the spiritual” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 320). Divine Love is speaking to each of us, all the time. As we’re studying the Lesson-Sermon individually, it speaks directly to us—it gives us the inspiration we need directly from God, when we listen with humility and an open heart. Others hear the inspiration they need. Though commentaries can be helpful to give historical context, ultimately, when we listen, we’ll each discern from the Bible our needed message (see “The Bible speaks to you,” Sentinel, May 11, 2026).
While we will continue to produce “Loving the Scriptures” articles in-house, we welcome you to submit 200-250 word pieces that fit the theme of this column: a brief discussion of the history and/or cultural context of a topic, idea, or person in the Bible, followed by a deeper insight from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy into how we can find inspiration and healing in that Bible topic. You can submit a piece through the submission form in the Writer’s Corner on JSH-Online.com.
