Denial of matter brings healing

In praying for the world, I begin by clarifying in my thinking what is not true and understanding more clearly what is true. The first two sentences of “the scientific statement of being” in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy are helpful in establishing what isn’t and what is: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (p. 468).

The full statement is read at the close of every Sunday service in every Church of Christ, Scientist. To me, this highlights how important Mrs. Eddy felt the denial of matter is in healing. A marginal heading in Science and Health says, “No material creation” (p. 256). These words are often the basis for my prayers, and as I stay with the truth that perfect God fills all space and created man in His image and likeness, I am able to more clearly see the nothingness of matter.

A wonderful healing I had some years ago showed me the importance of refusing to attribute to matter any intelligence or power. I was with a friend who was visiting from another country. She knew very little English, and I was sharing my understanding of Christian Science in her language.
