We can never fall out of God’s care
As First Reader of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I had prepared readings on the topic “The Healing Truth” for our Wednesday evening testimony meeting. The subject of that week’s Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly was “Christian Science.” Studying my readings and the Lesson helped me gain more understanding in order to demonstrate the truth of my being as the wholly spiritual creation of God, Spirit. But it didn’t occur to me at the time that I would have an opportunity to prove these truths so soon.
Around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning, I awoke to my dogs barking, so I got up to check things out. I started down the stairs in the dark. Next thing I knew, I had landed headfirst at the bottom. I immediately began declaring to myself some spiritual facts I had learned in Christian Science—that I could never fall out of God’s care, that God is my Life, and that no accidents can happen in the perfection of God, the one infinite Mind.
I remembered this from the Bible: “In [God] we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28). The thought came to pray about what is termed in Christian Science animal magnetism—the aggressive belief that there is any power apart from God. I was tempted to lie where I’d fallen as I prayed, but I remembered this from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good” (p. 393).
