Yearning to know God
From early childhood, I had always wanted to know more about God. As a young adult, I had visited many different churches, attended some quite regularly, and even joined one as a member. Somehow, though, I was not satisfied with what I was learning, and I realized that being honest with myself and others would be a step in the right direction. My girlfriend (and future wife) attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and she invited me to a Christian Science lecture. I don’t remember many details of that lecture, but I was curious enough to want to learn more.
I started attending Christian Science church services, and eventually, my exploration of other denominations stopped altogether. I joined The Mother Church (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston) and several years later, took Christian Science Primary class instruction. This two-week class in spiritual healing is all about gaining a deeper, clearer view of what God is and what my true being is.
I knew it was important to obey the Ten Commandments, but I saw that I still had doubt in my heart about the existence of God. I read over and over what the Bible says in Genesis 1 about God creating the heaven and the earth. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which is the textbook of Christian Science, I came across this passage: “The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. . . . Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith” (p. vii).
