One Spirit, not many spirits

Belief in many spirits was widespread in ancient times. Some people were considered mediums for communication with spirits of the dead, and others were thought to be possessed by evil spirits or demons.

When the Israelites entered into a covenant with the one God, Spirit, they committed to turning only to Him for guidance. Despite this, though, they sometimes consulted what they called “familiar spirits.” And their first king, Saul, exhibited a mental disturbance termed “an evil spirit” (see I Samuel 16:14, 15).

Throughout Christ Jesus’ ministry, reliance on God as Spirit brought healing and redemption. The Master taught, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24, New Century Version). His early followers continued working to destroy belief in personal spirits, including dependence on sorcery, divination, and magic (see examples in Acts 8:5–7 and 16:16–18).
