I was looking for God
When I look back on how I found Christian Science, it doesn’t feel like something I set out to do. It feels more as though it gently found me.
I was young—fresh out of Coast Guard boot camp—and my first duty station was downtown San Francisco. Coming from rural Kansas, I felt pretty lost. I was living in a cheap little place because I didn’t have much money. I didn’t know many people and didn’t know myself either.
On the outside, I looked fine. On the inside, not so much. Alcohol was easily available, and I was leaning on it more than I was comfortable admitting, even to myself. I just didn’t feel anchored.
