Why we already have what we need

It is through the bottomless supply of divine wisdom that our needs are met.

I’ve always loved the Bible story of Elisha and the poor widow (see II Kings 4:1–7). This woman was on the brink of losing her children, who were to be taken as slaves by her creditor to settle her debts. When she reached out to the prophet Elisha for help, he responded, “What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house?”

It’s noteworthy that Elisha did not begin running through the village to take up a collection for the woman. Nor did he plead with the widow’s creditors for mercy. Instead, he directed her to see first what she already had in her house. To me, this showed that he did not regard her as lacking anything—that, despite appearances, he was certain she actually had what she needed.

Elisha did not begin running through the village to take up a collection for the woman.
