Church Alive March 5, 2012 Issue

The following was written in support of Church Alive, a focus of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, that explores the meaning and possibilities of awakening to the spiritual basis and impact of Church.

A book-fair blessing

We have a little church in Delhi, India, with a small membership. (Once I heard someone calling it a “dead church.”) Last year, we received an invitation to take part in the Delhi book fair. Entrance to the book fair required tickets.

Some doubts were raised by our loving members because of the huge expenditure involved and the lack of staff to man the bookstall. However, our church was inspired by bringing our healing book Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy to the attention of thousands of people (mostly people with non-Christian backgrounds) who would visit the fair daily.

A lot of discussion took place in our church about this activity. We discussed how grateful we were for Mrs. Eddy, who made sacrifices to write Science and Health, and how she went from shop to shop to sell this book, as well as her desire to have all Christian Scientists promote the sale of this book.
