Looking for work? Start with prayer
Steven Salt, a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science who lives in Columbus, Ohio, was the guest on this spirituality.com chat. Steven was the owner of a family hardware store and worked as a handyman while he transitioned into the full-time practice of Christian healing. The text has been edited for readability.
If someone has been unemployed for several years, what are some fresh ways to pray about finding work after having been unemployed for so long?
I think an important place to start is to know that God’s supply, which includes everything we need, is always available. There are not a whole lot of stories in the Bible about employment because back then, of course, there was an agrarian society. But there are many stories in the Bible about supply. We have the story of Elijah and the widow whose barrel of meal and cruse of oil didn’t fail (see I Kings 17:10–16). There’s the story of Peter finding a coin in the fish’s mouth at Jesus’ request (see Matt. 17:24–27), Jesus’ feeding the multitudes (for example, John 6:5–13), escape from harm (Luke 4:28–30), and all the physical healings. And there’s Mrs. Eddy’s statement, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (Science and Health, p. 494).
