Connected to God—in business, and in life!

I’ve come to treasure the spiritual awakenings that take us to higher ground, like the one I had in 2009 on a drive to Texas.

I own an interior design studio and retail business. It was January, and I was starting a design job in Dallas, which is about 650 miles away from my hometown of Santa Fe. Because of the economy, my revenues were dropping significantly, and I was concerned about the future of my business. I didn’t like how my new year was starting, and I wanted to shift things. Things felt out of whack. I was worried about my employees’ jobs and about the future of the home industry itself. I knew I needed some consecrated “God time,” so I packed up my “God Pod”—an MP3 player onto which I’ve downloaded all kinds of spiritual recordings—and headed down the Interstate.

As I listened, I saw how disconnected I was feeling from God. The previous year, I’d awakened early every morning to pray. And through that dedicated time it had become clear to me that I had to heal the lie that I ever had been or ever could be separated from God. As Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love” ( Science and Health, p. 91).
