Each of us is needed

We all want to feel worthwhile, active, and useful. But for those dealing with unemployment or underemployment, especially for an extended period of time, being out of work can bring about feelings of disconnection and even worthlessness. It’s no stretch to say that for many, these feelings of dejection can be as difficult to overcome as the financial challenges unemployment often poses.

But it’s also no stretch to say that prayer can be an effective response. Far from being just an appeal to a higher power to arrange circumstances favorably, prayer changes our perspective on life and reveals God’s abundance and care for each one of us—which naturally includes meaningful, satisfying work.

This issue of the Sentinel explores the role that our relationship with God can play in assuring work for everyone. In our cover section, Ron Ballard writes of a man for whom insight gained from reading Science and Health—including the realization that “whatever blesses one blesses all”—set the stage for powerful progress that brought him income and meaningful activity. Ron writes, “When this man began to see that there was something more in his quest for employment than just meeting his own needs, he found increasing ways to bless others. He valued what he was doing . . . as an opportunity to express God’s love” (p. 15).
