Skip the gym and check out a book

THAT'S WHAT I'D SAY after reading the headline today in The Times (UK edition, August 13, 1998). The headline that caught my eye was—"Skip the gym and check out Church." The article reports on an American research team's study of the difference in longevity and good health in those who reach out for their hymnbooks every week compared with those who don't attend church. This message had special significance for me.

Before learning about Christian Science, I had regularly attended a Christian church. My father was a Christian minister and a hospital chaplain. While I knew the Bible very well, much of it remained a total mystery to me.

I was also a medical nurse, and I had witnessed some miraculous healings in the hospital. I was impressed, and I wondered if the miracles of Jesus still happened today. But I wasn't desperate to find out; I was just curious. I had always been healthy. I carried on going to church, and I kept looking into and studying different books on Christianity just because I was interested in it.
