Slightly Over A year ago, aggressive racist and anti-Semitic literature was distributed in several communities in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. In response, community leaders formed an Ad Hoc Committee Against Hate and wrote a "Statement of Principle" rejecting racism in all its forms. Citizens were invited to sign this statement, which affirmed "the dignity and value of all human beings...."
Although contrary to many of its editorial guidelines, the local newspaper agreed to publish the statement and the names of the more than 840 citizens who signed it. In an editorial it declared, "[This] is a way of demonstrating that when it comes to hatred, there is no shortage of people who will stand up and be counted against it."
