Prayer eliminates fever and fatigue
Some months ago I had been systematically reading chapters in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy in order to gain a deeper understanding of its spiritual content and to apply more consistently the healing truths it elucidates. Yet, while I was doing this, I began to experience fever, aching, and fatigue. In countering the illness through prayer, I strongly and repeatedly affirmed God's wholeness and goodness. I recognized that as God's child I am the perfect reflection of the Divine. God, Spirit, could not author sin or sickness, and thus their effects could not undermine my spirituality and completeness. I decided to continue praying for myself and attending church faithfully, but felt it was best to curtail my workload somewhat in order to be more consistently devoted to healing.
After a week, though, the malady had worsened. However, I persevered in my prayer and my reading of Science and Health. One passage that was especially helpful was this: "Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death. Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (p. 393).
When there was still no visible improvement after two weeks, my wife asked if it would be a good idea to call a Christian Science practitioner. I'd already given this a lot of thought. I felt I wasn't just being stubborn, since I have received significant help from practitioners over the years. However, this time the imperative clearly was that I could and should continue praying on my own, knowing that I could only be strengthened by learning to become a more effective healer. A few days later I began to see improvement. I participated joyfully in a full day's work, feeling steadily better, and after several days the healing was complete and permanent.
