Perspectives on body and soul: Special report on Boston conference

More than twelve hundred people from thirty American states and several overseas countries gathered in Boston in September for the fourth annual "Body and Soul" conference presented by the monthly magazine New Age Journal and by Interface, a holistic learning center in Newton, Massachusetts. Speakers and workshop leaders included physicians, psychologists, teachers, writers, performing artists, and healers from various faith traditions.

At the opening plenary session, the executive director of Interface, Susan Collett, encouraged delegates to establish a true sense of community, which she described as "a shift from focus in yourself to that space between yourself and another person where something magical can happen."

New Age Journal publisher David Thorne emphasized that everywhere "there is a quest for meaning and spiritual connections which is causing [all] of us to reexamine our lives and the world we live in." He said: "Our culture seems to be exploring and embracing these new ideas in ways which would have been unimaginable only a few years ago."
