During the birth of our first child, I had torn severely

During the birth of our first child, I had torn severely. So when I became pregnant with our second daughter, I didn't relish the idea of experiencing a similar injury. It struck me that even such a minor fear was worthy of prayerful attention, so that my thought during the pregnancy didn't include any inharmony. And the pregnancy was, in fact, so full of joy and light that I felt sure that the child would have a sense of humor and be free from worry. (And she does!)

Because my husband and I had engaged the services of midwives for the birth, we felt that we would try to comply with their wishes. At first I was tempted to be irritated with their desire for us to have the birth only at their facility, but when I sought to gain a better sense of love for these workers and gratitude for their concern, I realized that the place of birth just wasn't as important as our clear sense of what birth is. Science and Health says: "To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, you should so detach mortal thought from its material conceptions, that the birth will be natural and safe. Though gathering new energy, this idea cannot injure its useful surroundings in the travail of spiritual birth" (p. 463).

The idea that this birth was truly a spiritual process, not a physical one, was a big relief to me. I knew that the inspiration we were gleaning, along with the treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, could be trusted to bring the proper results in the birth of our child. This certainly proved to be true. A week before the birth, the midwife admitted that really there would be no benefit to having the birth at their facility. Our daughter was born within forty minutes of the first real contraction. Although she weighed almost ten pounds, I didn't have the slightest tear. I even went to the lumber store with my husband that afternoon.
