God's sure supply
How difficult it seems to pay a bill when it requires all that is left in the checkbook. Yet, as we learn of God as infinite Love, we understand that His care is not sporadic but constant and permanent. Affirming God's goodness and His presence is a powerful prayer that meets every need. It lifts our thought away from the limited figures in the checkbook to God's constant care. It opens our eyes to His spiritual provision right here, and this makes a difference on the human scene.
The Bible is filled with instances of people turning to God and having their needs met in practical ways. When Moses was leading the children of Israel out of Egypt, their cry for food was answered with manna (see Ex., chap. 16). This was a daily supply that continued for forty years—as long as they had need for it. They could not, however, hoard it; any that they gathered beyond their needs would spoil. They had to trust that God feeds His offspring as they need it.
When Christ Jesus needed to pay taxes (see Matt. 17:24-27) the need was met. And Jesus proved that when he had any other need, God would provide for it, too. God's care for man is just as effective today. When I left my salaried job to devote more time in service to God, I needed to overcome fear that we would lack the means of paying our bills. I prayed to understand better the certainty of God's provision for man. I knew that God, who is Love itself, can no more withdraw His love than we can exist without Him. Because we are made in the image of Love, we can love with inexhaustible affection. We don't fear that the love we feel for others will be depleted. Each day's love is fresh and new. It wells up as we use it. I saw that in a very basic sense, this is supply. Every day God provides His child with love, intelligence, dignity, and honesty that are fresh each moment.
