Why I do volunteer work

For a couple of reasons. First of all, it needs to be done. I help children in foster care get into safe, permanent families. All children deserve that. If there's any little part I can play in helping a child feel the security and support of a loving family, I want to do that. The work is quite sobering at times, but it's also very heartening to see the effort being made on behalf of these children by social workers, foster parents, and the like. What's most rewarding, of course, is seeing the progress the children themselves make. Success stories sometimes emerge from even the most difficult circumstances.

The other reason I'm active in this and other, related volunteer work is that I'm so grateful for my own family. Several years ago I adopted a child as a single parent. It gets exciting sometimes being the sole bread-winner and a full-time mom, but not a day goes by that I don't marvel at the beauty of our being together and thank God for this evidence of His love. Another way I thank Him is by trying to help others feel the love of family.
