When I landed in New York in August 1939, it was already...

When I landed in New York in August 1939, it was already obvious that war was about to break out. I had undertaken to drive from coast to coast with a friend, but apart from that I knew no one, had no plans, and had brought with me little more than £100 (about $500). As soon as war was declared, all European bank accounts were frozen, and I could not get any more cash, nor could my family send me any. I can only testify that God took care of me in every way for the remainder of my stay—which turned out to be thirty years.

After my cross-country trip I returned to New York to decide what to do next. I wanted to see The Mother Church in Boston, so I wrote to a couple I had heard my family mention and asked them to get me a hotel room. They were both Christian Science practitioners, and they took care of me for the whole of my stay in Boston.

During this visit the wife advised me that if I decided to stay in the United States, I must get a job, and to do this I would need training. She suggested I go to the offices of The Christian Science Monitor and look up back advertisements to see if there were any I would find helpful. I did this and found two in New York City—one for a room to rent and another for typing and shorthand lessons, both of them in the same block. I returned to New York and answered both ads, taking the secretarial course for three months. My first job began the day the course ended. From then on I depended on God's guidance in finding employment as well as places to live.
