Six years ago my mother-in-law abruptly got divorced and did not have the resources to live on her own. After briefly studying the story of Ruth and Naomi in the Bible, and feeling a lot of love for her, I suggested to my husband that she move in with us. He was hesitant, but I assured him that I was comfortable with the idea.
Within a year it was evident that things were not going well. I had been praying for the right solution to the situation, but I kept struggling between feeling responsible as a daughter-in-law and needing to establish a strong and peaceful home.
At the same time, I began experiencing a pressure and tightness in my left shoulder and back area. I was feeling burdened. Although I was having a Christian Science practitioner treat me, I couldn't seem to find a solution. One day an article that appeared in the Sentinel meant a great deal to me. It talked about not entertaining "selective" love. I realized that I could not, nor did I honestly want to, love only those people I thought deserved my love.
