God as provider

When my husband and I started out as a couple, we ended up moving thousands of miles away from all our family members. We brought with us whatever possessions fitted into a backpack and two suitcases. Living simply in our new location, we worked part-time and/or seasonal jobs—whatever employment situations came our way—to pay our expenses.

A radical change occurred when we found out we were going to have a child. Our nontraditional living situation involved sharing a household with a group of people, some of whom were experimenting with drugs. It was important for us to find an affordable place of our own in order to prepare for this little one. In thinking about how to provide for this child, we turned to God for help.

My husband and I had come from different backgrounds, but we both wanted to find out how to pray effectively. We decided to contact a Christian Science practitioner to help us feel God's care for us. She immediately recognized that the Bible would help us understand God better and show us that God loved us even during the toughest of circumstances. I remember thinking a lot about this passage as we prayed to feel God's presence: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov. 3:5, 6).
