Learning about miracles and God's law
Miracles are actually proofs of God's law, and they can happen to anyone— including you and me.
Nothing short of a miracle could take care of a situation like this!" Many of us may have thought or said something of the sort about problems that beset us or others. Yet do we think of miracles only as extraordinary events that took place many centuries ago and are not likely to occur today?
There's a thought-moving explanation of the term miracle in the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It reads: "That which is divinely natural, but must be learned humanly; a phenomenon of Science." Science and Health, p. 591. The capitalized word Science refers in this context to the universal spiritual laws of God, good, which are continuously enforced by Him to maintain the harmony of His spiritual creation.
The Bible tells of the spiritual growth that enables us to trust God more and to perceive the real nature of miracles. For example, Bible readers are familiar with the story of the Israelites' remarkable passage through the Red Sea. But are we equally aware of all the spiritual preparation that took place in relation to this experience? In earnest communion with God, Moses had voiced fears of personal inadequacy along with concern that the people would scorn the whole idea of his leadership. He was to learn that spiritual power is a God-given quality that would enable him to employ wisdom and moral courage in human situations. Preparation for his great task took place in the consciousness—the thought—of Moses. He gained closer acquaintance with God, the divine source of being. This gave him confidence that God's help would enable him to complete his task.
