A HEART FOR COMMUNITY
It's natural to care deeply about community. Real love for family extends to neighbors—and overflows for the whole of society. This occasional column tells of how a spiritual perspective has been helping Sentinel readers help others and make a contribution to healing some of the collective challenges facing communities today.
I was going to church one night, and it was raining hard. Walking along, I saw a woman sitting in the rain, shivering. I tried to speak to her, but she wasn't making sense. I think that she'd been drinking.
"Well, I'd better get on to church," I thought. I didn't get very far. I thought, "Church is about taking care of one another." And so I went back and stopped at a nearby store and bought something warm for the woman to eat underneath a little awning.
