Suburbs, mountains, exalted valleys
"SPIRITUAL HEALING HITS THE SUBURBS" says the cover of one of the popular newsstand publications.
"Social scientists," the article explains, "often assume that only the lower classes subscribe to alternative healing systems.... But many middle-class people now adhere to a wide range of beliefs and practices not sanctioned by mainstream medicine." Psychology Today, January/February 1989, p. 57 .
True. Yet it's also apparent from the article that these wide-ranging "beliefs and practices" can lead into some marshy if not downright swampy areas—from meditation to faith healing and on into psychic healing and the occult.
