One time I had what I thought was a serious cold. A colleague remarked that I probably had allergies and then proceeded to tell me which plants were the cause of the problem. I scoffed at the idea because I had never had allergies. But then I thought about it and remembered that these same symptoms had appeared every fall for the past few years and that I was displaying the physical evidence of allergies described in certain television commercials.
I didn't know very much about allergies except that they were negative physical reactions to certain plants or animals. I wasn't even familiar with what I was supposed to be allergic to! But I did know that such a condition couldn't have its source in God and therefore was not an aspect of my nature as a child of God. I began to pray for myself.
The words to Hymn No. 144 in the Christian Science Hymnal came to mind. They begin:
