A number of years ago my husband and I had...
A number of years ago my husband and I had the privilege of class instruction in Christian Science. Our teacher taught us to be persistent in adhering, to divine Truth—to stay with God and not with the problem. We were also taught that there is no incurable disease, because disease is mental in nature and there is no incurable thought.
I wear glasses. About three years ago an optometrist told me that the cornea of one of my eyes had a film on the front and a cataract forming. He said the film could probably be controlled by medication (no mention of a cure), but that surgery would be necessary for the cataract. While this diagnosis was being voiced, I silently denied the existence of a condition that could negate the spiritual fact of my coexistence with God, good. I had no desire to go the medical route; I knew that Christian Science heals completely and permanently.
I then wrote a Christian Science practitioner and asked for his help through prayer. We were in touch by phone each week. Fear and self-doubt had to be cast out, and an understanding of my unity with God had to be more firmly established in consciousness. These statements of Christ Jesus' were of great help: "I can of mine own self do nothing" (John 5:30) and "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works" (14:10). Also helpful was Paul's statement (Acts 17:28), "For in him [God] we live, and move, and have our being." And on page 361 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy assures us, "As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being."
