What is man really like?
Over a hundred years ago a woman set down a startling statement: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." Some readers, shaken from a materialistic basis by this, became indignant or scornful. How could an unknown woman dare shatter long-established beliefs!
But Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, remained undaunted by the world's reaction. Her description of man continues: "The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness." The tremendous surge of truth goes on: "The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit." Divine logic is irrefutable! Then for me comes the climax of the statement of this new-old theology: "Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science. Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique." Science and Health, p. 475.
The image of Love? The Bible emphasizes that God is Love. Surely God is not a mortal, but Spirit itself! The Bible also states that God made man in His own image and likeness (see Gen. 1:26). Man must be spiritual, must be loving, therefore, because he's the image of God, Spirit, Love.
