Reach Up for the Sugar Bowl

Joy is always divinely natural and belongs to us, as God's ideas, in all its fullness. Even so, it may seem we're sometimes less than joyful. Perhaps we're wondering how we might more readily avail ourselves of the joy that is so divinely natural. Christ Jesus declared, "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." John 15:11;

Is some active step required of us? Or do we simply wait until circumstances or situations change, or until someone lifts us up and out of the depths?

At one time I was waiting for precisely this to happen. You can imagine my great disappointment when, after a time of wallowing in the mire of depression, I was no better, and the one to whom I had turned for help was reminding me that I had something to do to regain my joy. She likened joy and inspiration to the sugar bowl on the shelf. The sugar was not going to jump off the shelf into my hands. I was going to have to reach up and get it.
