The Irresistible Christ

As a small leaf that has fallen into a stream is tossed and carried toward the sea, so it appears mankind is helplessly governed by material forces through the brief journey of mortal life.

But man, as he is revealed in the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, is really spiritual, governed entirely by God, divine Mind, and is inseparable from the holy currents of Truth. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God." Further on she continues, "The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin." Science and Health, p. 475;

Man was formed with neither the ability nor the freedom to be pulled contrary to omnipotent spiritual good. The power that claims to pull mankind contrary to God—Life, Truth, and Love— is termed animal magnetism by Mrs. Eddy. Animal magnetism or the mesmeric suggestions of the carnal mind would lead us to believe both that we are separated from God and that the supposed material laws of sin, sickness, and death can prevent us from awakening here and now to our unity with Him.
