Spiritualized Thought Promotes Moral Healing

God, Principle, creates man in His own likeness. Spiritual man, therefore, is created whole and harmonious. Through natural, divine law he reflects the divine perfection of God, Spirit. Moral courage to take a stand for man's purity and perfection can be demonstrated through understanding and obeying the law of divine Principle.

If you were asked to steal or perform an act of deliberate fraud, your natural reaction would probably be an emphatic "No!" Wanting to treat others as you would have them treat you, you could reject the temptation to perform an unkind deed or an unnatural, immoral act of any kind. Through the application of spiritual laws rooted in divine Principle, whereby Spirit, God, makes thought receptive to good, you can demonstrate moral health and the truth, or Science, of being.

There is no real attraction in evil, since God is good and man is made in God's image. "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matt. 6:24;

Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, also commands us, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." 5:48; This is not an unrealistic demand but a necessary, liberating one. For as you purify the motives of your heart, you begin to see the perfection Jesus speaks of as the natural quality of your individual, spiritual selfhood—the pure reflection of divine Principle. You advance Spiritward, being reborn and leaving the discord of the past behind. Lust and other false desires are put aside. Sin, forsaken and not to be repeated, is truly forgiven. Spiritual identity, established on the rock of Truth, Principle, is expressed in your living and is manifested in moral health and spiritual well-being.

Sometimes testing times teach us the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement: "The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses." Science and Health, p. 228; Experiencing such true freedom in daily living, we naturally grow in spiritual stature and become renewed—made whole in Spirit.

A young man, enslaved by a habit of promiscuity, suffered a nervous breakdown. Praying scientifically for healing over a period of several years, he relied solely on divine Principle to guide him to healing. Basing his thought on the Principle of divine perfection, he claimed his true identity in Spirit, and the mesmerism of false attraction was soon broken. Consecrated prayer and study led eventually to complete healing, which proved to be a landmark in his spiritual growth. The moral healing led to a better understanding of spiritual reality (as does every healing), evidenced by other demonstrations of Truth, such as becoming a better, more honest, and more fit church member.

When we gain a correct understanding of the nature of God's man, as revealed through divine Mind's spiritualizing of thought, we are able to discern and demonstrate the fact that cause is wholly spiritual and spiritual man is its effect. In these ways spiritual understanding evidences divine Principle in action.

The high standard of Christian Science requires its adherents to be obedient to the moral law as outlined in the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. This law represents in human affairs the order of divine Principle. It is not restrictive but liberating in every sense of the word. It is wholesome, upright, and spiritually pure. Furthermore, moral freedom and purity enrich and bless all mankind. In seeking a healing of morals it is wise to remember Mrs. Eddy's important counsel: "Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth." ibid., p. 485;

Casting out sin is a moral requirement that everyone should strive to fulfill, so as to be rising higher in the demonstration of Life, Truth, and Love. Inner conflicts and wrong desires (including lust and belief in the need for the habits of profanity, smoking, and social drinking) can all be resolved and permanently healed by applying the law of divine Principle to meeting the moral obligations of church membership.

The third of Mrs. Eddy's six Tenets of Christian Science (all of which are signed by those uniting with The Mother Church) states: "We acknowledge God's forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts." ibid., p. 497.

Do you need to demonstrate purer morals? As a seasoned student of Christian Science or as a newcomer, are you unhappy with your present life-style? Are you striving to live up to the standards of Church, of Truth and Love? If so, you can be assured that when you gain sufficient understanding of what your relationship to God, Spirit, actually is and claim this dominion, based on divine Principle, for yourself, the healing power of the Christ, Truth, will be revealed in proportion to that understanding.

Through deep study of the Bible, the Lesson-Sermons (published in the Christian Science Quarterly), and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, you can be confident that increased spiritualization of thought will guide you naturally in each advancing step until moral healing is complete. Then you will discover that the divine Mind, God, directs and unfolds the way to genuine Life, Truth, and Love, through the law of divine Principle.

Align your thoughts with this perfect law, and claim your spiritual identity through it, now! Your reward will be total liberation from unwanted bondage, and your advancement Spiritward will be unlimited; for Spirit, indeed, does attract, and it heals all moral blight. Gratitude and spiritual growth will be your recompense. Your keen awareness and heightened understanding of spiritual reality, reflecting only the good and true, will be enhanced. And your life-style will become one of true freedom and pure joy, honoring divine Principle, Love.
