During my high school years I attended a Christian Science Sunday School and learned something of how to apply Christian Science in my daily living. At my graduation I was required to give an address. Since I was afraid to speak in class, I was terrified at the prospect of speaking before a large audience.

On the day of my speech I was filled with gratitude for Christian Science. These words from the Lord's Prayer stood out in my thought and were illumined to me (Matt. 6:13): "Lead us not into temptation." It meant, to me, not to be tempted to believe in any reality other than God and the love He was pouring forth. I also clearly saw that believing in a power apart from God—such as fear—was only a temptation, only a false belief. As I spoke, I felt all of us were surrounded by Love. I loved everyone there, and I loved giving that talk. I was free from fear or any nervousness.

In the following years I drifted away from the teachings of Christian Science, but this experience was always a beacon to me.
