When I was four years old, my mother was said to be dying of consumption, heart trouble, and many other ailments. One day after the doctor had bidden her good-bye, and sensing what he was about to tell her neighbors, Mother raised her arms and said, "Now, God, I'll come to You." By this she did not mean that she was ready to pass on, but she was ready to try spiritual means of healing. A neighbor had offered Christian Science, but Mother had rejected it. Now, with a change of heart, she managed to get herself dressed.

Holding on to everything she could grasp, Mamma reached the open streetcar. Suddenly she felt free; her thought soared. A few statements given to her by the neighbor, who was now a Christian Science practitioner living on the other side of the city, were remembered. "Man is, and forever has been, God's reflection" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 471) was one statement she recalled. A verse from the Bible strengthened her (Ps. 73:26): "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."

My father, seeing his wife standing in his office doorway, picked her up in his arms, called a cab, and took her "to be healed."
