Letters to the Press
From Christian Science Committees on Publication
Watertown Sun
Watertown, Massachusetts
The pleasant little article on a Halloween excursion (October 30) was marred by one rather unfortunate piece of misjudgment.
This was yielding to the temptation to repeat once again a tired old falsehood about a supposed telephone in Mary Baker Eddy's tomb at Mount Auburn. [The writer] rightly calls it a "local legend" but then she tells it as though it were gospel truth. It's not merely the perpetuating of an entirely untrue story that is regrettable, but the easy "story telling" at the expense of other folks' religion.
