The Letter's Part in Healing

In the healing practice of Christian Science the power of God Himself, the power of divine Truth and Love, is what makes prayer effective. As our words, spoken or unspoken, express the spirit of Truth and our attitudes express the spirit of the divine Principle, Love, our prayer is answered by healing.

Separated from this spirit, the words, or letter, of Christianity and Christian Science, however fluent, lack power. They may actually lead into hypocrisy and self-delusion. But even a little of the spirit without much of the letter can effect good. Some Bible figures who lived long before Christ Jesus, and still longer before the revelations of the Christ Science, possessed keen spiritual insight. This made them towering moral and spiritual leaders; a number of them also performed works of great spiritual power, including healing at many levels.

A casual or selective reading of these Bible facts has sometimes led people to think the letter unimportant. They are mistaken. Jesus said of the law that not one jot or tittle of it—we might say today not one dotting of an i or crossing of a t—should go unfulfilled; he came to fulfill the law, not to destroy it.
