The Happiness of Soul

When I applied for membership in a Christian Science Society, during my interview I was asked, "What is God to you?" I answered spontaneously, "My happiness!" Why did I make this response? Why didn't I reply, "God is Love"?

In answer to the question "What is God?" Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Science and Health, p. 465; Of these synonymous terms for God, Love was the one that had most meaning for me. The words "God is Love" had made such impact on me when I began the study of Christian Science that they impelled me to study with tremendous interest. Step by step I had learned that God, Soul, divine Love, is the source of all true happiness.

When we accept the great truth that God is Love and live fully with this understanding, we naturally reject the arguments of error that would convince us we have reason to feel sad, anxious, worried, or disappointed. This rejection does not come from human will but from the understanding that only good—happiness, harmony, and joy—emanates from God.
