All Christian Scientists know and love the powerful paragraph in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, where she asks, "What is the scientific statement of being?" and answers in these words (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." These words and the thoughts they convey are implicit in all Mrs. Eddy's writings and run through them like a golden thread. The truths of this profound statement have healed many diseases. Their power is derived from God, divine Mind, and the authority of the Christ, which Jesus exemplified.

When utilized with thoughtful pondering, the statement is, indeed, effective and vital prayer. Because it is so effective, it may well be considered a spiritual declaration of independence—an independence from matter and its various spurious claims. And how the world does need such a sure declaration of freedom from the devious claims of matter as substance!

Two years ago I was suddenly confronted with a condition of severe hemorrhaging. I was unable to get to the telephone to call a Christian Science practitioner. Immediately I pondered the truths of "the scientific statement of being," endeavoring to pray them. I was unafraid, although the physical symptoms were alarming. I knew with conviction there is truly no life in matter; I could not be attacked by a suggestion that God, Spirit, is less than omnipotent and omnipresent. Since man is an expression of the allness of Mind, I could be conscious only of Mind's manifestation of good. I realized that the testimony of the physical senses is impermanent. I further reasoned that spiritual sense heals, and spiritual consciousness cannot be shaken. Finally I had great peace and freedom, and I was permanently healed.
