After many years of demonstrating the healing power of Christian Science, there came a time when I had to struggle with disappointment in relationships. In addition, I became impatient over various church situations. I became apathetic and joyless. The result was physical discomfort. An ulcer developed in my throat. Although I struggled hard to recognize and deny the physical symptoms as beliefs and to acknowledge the perfect creation of divine Mind, the error did not yield. Instead, it became steadily worse, since I was not able to detect the mental cause.

I was fearful and finally decided to ask for the help of a Christian Science practitioner, mindful of Mrs. Eddy's words in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 420): "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them. If they are unwilling to do this for themselves, they need only to know that error cannot produce this unnatural reluctance."

I was quite depressed at times, since the symptoms sometimes seemed very real to me and I couldn't see why my spiritual understanding had so declined. I was aware that it makes no difference whether the false belief appears small or great—nor even what name it has—it is and continues to be only a lie, a false belief. The practitioner had to be very patient with me, since I did not see why something like this had happened to me.
