Baby-sitting on a dark night with...

Only a Dog to Talk To

The house where I was baby-sitting that Saturday night was a creaky old house. The children were in bed, and I was sitting in the living room. Next to my chair lay the family dog. The only noises I could hear were creaks all through the house, and windows and doors rattling in their frames. It was very late at night, and a storm was building up outside.

All alone, except for the dog, I began to get a little nervous. I looked anxiously at the clock every five minutes, I was so impatient for the parents to come home. Finally, I felt extremely fearful and restless.

It was then that it suddenly dawned on me that God was with me right then and there. Well, that thought led the way to others like it. I saw that God is All and so I could never be separated from Him. I saw that God is Love and so nothing could touch me but good. I just kept holding to these lines from Psalm 91: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." Ps. 91:1, 2; In fact, that whole psalm is extremely comforting, particularly to a frightened baby-sitter.
