A few years ago I had the privilege of serving as First Reader in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Out of a joyful sense of gratitude for this assignment I was inspired to work toward a demonstration of God's healing power—work which was long overdue.

For twenty-five years I had worn eyeglasses. The necessity for the glasses had come as the result of an accident which occurred on my job before I became a student of Christian Science. The physicians said it would always be necessary for me to wear glasses to see clearly.

There was a two-month period between election to this church office and the first service at which I read. It was my sincere desire to dispense with the glasses. These words of Mrs. Eddy's supplied the courage for me to move forward spiritually: "It is safe to leave with God the government of man. He appoints and He anoints His Truth-bearers, and God is their sure defense and refuge" (Retrospection and Introspection, pp. 90, 91). I was in my right place to serve God. In prayerful preparation to assume office, I worked to know that my full reliance, in every sense, was on the Christ, Truth. A Science friend helped me prepare by listening to my reading practice, and by assuring me of my God-given right to freedom from the use of the glasses.
