"And in my trunk I put ..."

When we were children, we used to entertain ourselves on long trips by playing games. One of our favorites was a memory word game in which the first player says, "I went on a trip to my grandmother's house, and in my trunk I put ..." and then names something starting with the letter A.

The next player repeats the same phrase and adds something beginning with the letter B. As the list grows longer, it becomes a challenge to remember the entire trunkful, all from A to Z.

In this air-transport age, few of us go to visit Grandmother—or anywhere else—with a trunkful of alphabetized miscellany; yet many of us travel, and all who do have to pack. Usually considerable care and forethought are given to what we put into our suitcases. But do we stop to consider what mental baggage we should take along with us?
