When I was sixteen years old, my mother was in very poor health, and had no desire to live. My grandmother was helping in the household, and one day when she went to the dry cleaners, the woman there asked her how her daughter was. My grandmother started to cry and said she was no better. The woman said, "Why doesn't she try Christian Science?"
Although my grandmother knew nothing about this religion, she relayed the message to my mother, who got the name of a Christian Science practitioner from the woman. Within three months, under Christian Science treatment, my mother was healed. She had learned just a little of man's spiritual status as a child of God.
During that period, before the family were established in their understanding of Science, I was stricken with an attack of appendicitis. Since the family doctor was away, another doctor was called, and advised an operation. My parents wanted to wait for their own doctor to operate, but my mother asked me if, while I was waiting for the doctor's return, I would go to see the practitioner. I had no desire to do so, but to please her said I would.
