When I first investigated Christian Science, I recognized that the truth in its teachings is that preached and practiced by the Master, Christ Jesus. Soon I began attending a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly, studying the Bible Lesson daily, reading the periodicals of Christian Science, and visiting the Reading Rooms.
In spite of numerous lessons to be learned and many false traits of character I had to overcome, my progress was rapid and steady, that is, until I was led to take the next logical step—church membership. I was eager to go forward, but the tobacco habit had to be overcome. In the words of Mrs. Eddy (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 119), "The nature of the individual, more stubborn than the circumstance, will always be found arguing for itself,—its habits, tastes, and indulgences." I had tried many times to stop smoking. But I knew that others had been healed of the habit through Christian Science without conscious effort, and stubborn will argued that for me just to stop suddenly would not be using Christian Science but willpower. Then came the angel thought, "The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 206).
The most cunning argument was, "Even if you wanted to, you just can't stop! The habit has too much hold on you. You're in bondage to it!" The Christ, Truth, came to my rescue. I found myself pondering the following Bible passage: "Who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" (Gal. 5:7.) This statement from Science and Health also came to mind (p. 327): "The way to escape the misery of sin is to cease sinning. There is no other way."
